Does the small CMB quadrupole moment suggest new physics?

چکیده
Motivated by WMAP’s confirmation of an anomalously low value of the quadrupole moment of the CMB temperature fluctuations, we investigate the effects on the CMB of cutting off the primordial power spectrum P (k) at low wave numbers. This could arise, for example, from a break in the inflaton potential, a prior period of matter or radiation domination, or an oscillating scalar field which couples to the inflaton. We reanalyze the full WMAP parameter space supplemented by a low-k cutoff for P (k). The temperature correlations by themselves are better fit by a cutoff spectrum, but including the TE temperature-polarization spectrum reduces this preference to a 1.4σ effect. Inclusion of large scale structure data does not change the conclusion. If taken seriously, the low-k cutoff is correlated with optical depth so that reionization occurs even earlier than indicated by the WMAP analysis.

Improved CMB Map from WMAP Data
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps published by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) team are found to be inconsistent with the differential time-ordered data (TOD), from which the maps are reconstructed. The inconsistency indicates that there is a serious problem in the map making routine of the WMAP team, and it is necessary to reprocess the WMAP data. We develo...
متن کاملCMB Temperature Anisotropy Quadrupole Generated by Tensor Perturbation
Using the method suggested in Ref.[1] and the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB) temperature anisotropy quadrupole observed by COBE, we find that C 2 /C S 2 = 5.9± 2.7, where C 2 and C S 2 are the CMB anisotropy quadrupole generated by tensor perturbation and scalar perturbation respectively. But if using the C 2 predicted by the standard inflationΛCDM models, we can find that C 2 /C S...
متن کاملImprint of Distortions in the Oort Cloud on the CMB Anisotropies
We study the effect of a close encounter of a passing star on the shape of the inner Oort Cloud, using the impulse approximation. The deviation of the perturbed Oort Cloud from sphericity adds angular fluctuations to the brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) due to thermal emission by the comets. An encounter with a solar-mass star at an impact parameter of 2100AU, as expected bas...
متن کاملGetting Around Cosmic Variance
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies probe the primordial density field at the edge of the observable Universe. There is a limiting precision (“cosmic variance”) with which anisotropies can determine the amplitude of primordial mass fluctuations. This arises because the surface of last scatter (SLS) probes only a finite two-dimensional slice of the Universe. Probing other SLSs observe...
متن کاملCross-correlation studies with CMB polarization maps
The free-electron population during the reionized epoch rescatters the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! temperature quadrupole and generates a now well-known polarization signal at large angular scales. While this contribution has been detected in the temperature-polarization cross power spectrum measured with Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data, due to the large cosmic variance associat...
